If you’re waiving your assignment fee for a non-profit organization, it’s important to maximize the publicity you get from the work. Find out how the organization plans to use the images and discuss with them ways in which you can receive notice. Have a clause in your contract that specifies that your credit always appears with the image. If the photos will be sent to the press, make sure that you are specifically mentioned in the press release, and in flattering, not just neutral terms.
If the organization has fund raisers, be sure that you’ll be invited as a guest, not to shoot the event. It can be a great opportunity to network with people who are inherently interested in the cause, and therefore your work. Whether they are civic and business leaders or just regular citizens, it’s a great way to build valuable relationships.
You might propose that some of your prints be used to help raise funds, either as auction items or as premiums to generous contributors. Just be sure that you and your name are figured prominently.
